Overview

Protein yippee-like 1 (YPEL1) is a nuclear and centrosomal protein encoded by a gene located in the genomic region associated with DiGeorge syndrome on chromosome 22[3]. It contains a zinc finger-like metal-binding domain and is believed to play a regulatory role in cell division and cell cycle progression[1][3]. YPEL1 localizes to the centrosome and nucleolus and has been shown to induce an epithelial-like transition in fibroblasts[2][3]. Functionally, YPEL1 and other YPEL family members regulate processes such as mesenchymal-epithelial transition, cell proliferation, senescence, and various aspects of mammalian development, and may act as tumor suppressors or promoters depending on the cancer type[1]. In cancers such as clear cell renal cell carcinoma, higher YPEL1 expression is associated with improved survival, and loss or knockdown of YPEL1 promotes cellular proliferation, migration, and invasion[1]. YPEL1 is also correlated with immune cell infiltration in tumors, implicating it in the regulation of the tumor microenvironment[1]. No drugs are currently known to interact directly with YPEL1, and it is not recognized as a direct therapeutic target or receptor. However, it may be of clinical relevance as a prognostic biomarker and in cancer immunology research[1][3].
