Overview

Protein yippee-like 4 (YPEL4) is a member of the highly conserved YPEL gene family, encoding proteins with zinc-finger-like domains known as Yippee domains[1]. YPEL4 is localized to the centrosome during interphase and to the mitotic apparatus during mitosis, suggesting an essential role in cell cycle regulation and proliferation[1]. YPEL4 interacts with major vault protein (MVP) and participates in mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway signaling, influencing Elk-1-mediated transcription and cellular proliferation[1]. It is highly expressed in lung, heart, and especially in late-stage erythroid differentiation[2][3]. YPEL4 deficiency in mice causes abnormal red blood cell morphology, reduced membrane deformability, and secondary polycythemia[2][3]. The protein may also play roles in the development of pulmonary diseases and is implicated in several cancers[1]. Despite its biological importance, YPEL4 is not yet associated with any approved drugs or established clinical biomarkers, and its potential as a therapeutic target is under investigation[1][2][3].
