Overview

Protein ZAR1-like (ZAR1L) is a member of the ZAR1 family of proteins and is predominantly expressed in oocytes and early embryos. It plays a crucial role as an mRNA-binding protein required for maternal mRNA storage, translation, and degradation during oocyte maturation. ZAR1L is believed to regulate the formation of phase-separated membraneless compartments that sequester maternal mRNAs and modulate their translation by binding to 3'-UTR regions, thereby preventing premature translation during early embryonic cell cycles. Mutations in ZAR1L have been associated with certain developmental disorders, but it is not documented as a pharmacological or therapeutic target[2][5][8].
