Proteinaceous exudate is a fluid rich in proteins and cellular elements that oozes out of blood vessels due to inflammation or injury (StatPearls, 2023). Unlike transudates, which are low in protein, exudates result from increased capillary permeability or lymphatic obstruction, often seen in conditions like pneumonia, malignancy, or autoimmune disorders (Merck Manual, 2024). In ophthalmology, proteinaceous 'hard' exudates are common in diabetic retinopathy, resulting from chronic leakage of serum lipoproteins into the retina (National Eye Institute, 2023). In the lungs, pulmonary alveolar proteinosis involves the accumulation of surfactant-derived proteinaceous material in the alveoli (NIH, 2022). Because it is a clinical manifestation rather than a single molecule, it is not considered a therapeutic target. However, its presence serves as a critical diagnostic biomarker that guides the use of drugs like corticosteroids or anti-VEGF agents to address the underlying pathology (PubMed, 2021). Pharmacological management focuses on reducing vascular leakage or treating the primary inflammatory stimulus rather than binding to the exudate itself.
