Overview

Proteoglycan 3, pro-eosinophil major basic protein 2 (PRG3) is an extracellular matrix protein primarily expressed in eosinophil granulocytes. It acts as a structural constituent conferring compression resistance in tissues and is involved in granulocyte activation. In vitro, PRG3 exhibits cytotoxic and cytostimulatory activities similar to those of PRG2/major basic protein, such as stimulating neutrophil superoxide production and interleukin-8 (IL-8) release. Its structure contains several cysteine disulfide linkages, and it is encoded by the PRG3 gene on chromosome 11. While it plays a role in immune cell function, there is limited evidence that PRG3 is currently a direct therapeutic target, nor are there known drugs or specific safety concerns associated with this molecule at this time[4][6].
