Target intelligence / Profile preview
Proteolipid protein (PLP), also known as myelin proteolipid protein or lipophilin, is the major integral membrane protein of central nervous system (CNS) myelin. It is highly hydrophobic and plays a critical role in the formation, compaction, stabilization, and maintenance of the multilamellar structure of myelin sheaths that insulate axons and facilitate rapid nerve impulse conduction. Mutations or abnormal expression/splicing cause several neurological disorders.
