Target intelligence / Profile preview
Proteolipid protein 1 (PLP1) is a critical transmembrane protein and the major structural component of myelin sheaths in the central nervous system (CNS). It facilitates compaction, stabilization, and maintenance of myelin. Mutations or deletions in PLP1 are linked to neurological disorders like Pelizaeus–Merzbacher disease and Spastic paraplegia type 2.
PLP1 molecules bind to each other on adjacent membrane layers to tightly hold cellular membranes together for proper nerve insulation and rapid impulse conduction.
