Proteolytic Enzymes in Aqueous Humor

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Protease, Serine protease, Elastase, Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)
01

Overview

Proteolytic enzymes, or proteases, in the aqueous humor play roles in tissue remodeling, immune defense, and response to injury. Key types include serine proteases, elastase, and likely matrix metalloproteinases. These enzymes contribute to normal turnover of extracellular matrix, immune surveillance, and wound healing. Their activity is regulated by antiproteases like alpha 1-antitrypsin, alpha 2-macroglobulin, and serpins (e.g., SERPINA3). Dysregulation, with increased levels/activity, is linked to ocular surface burns, corneal ulcers, and glaucoma.
