Coagulation Factor II (Prothrombin)

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine Protease, Zymogen
01

Overview

Coagulation factor II, commonly known as prothrombin, is a vital plasma glycoprotein involved in the blood coagulation cascade. It serves as the precursor to thrombin, an enzyme that plays a central role in converting fibrinogen into fibrin during clot formation. Prothrombin is encoded by the F2 gene and synthesized primarily in the liver. Upon vascular injury, it is activated by the prothrombinase complex (composed of factor Xa and cofactor Va), which cleaves prothrombin to generate active thrombin. Thrombin catalyzes the conversion of fibrinogen to insoluble fibrin, activation of factors V, VII, VIII, XIII and platelet activation.
