Overview

Prothymosin alpha pseudogene 12 (PTMAP12) is a human processed pseudogene derived from the protein-coding prothymosin alpha (PTMA) gene, localized on chromosome 9. Unlike its parental gene, PTMAP12 is not believed to encode a functional protein. However, expression of PTMAP12 has been observed in some cancers, and recent transcriptomic analysis has identified PTMAP12 as a novel pseudogene with elevated expression in acute myeloid leukemia compared to chronic myeloid leukemia, but not in healthy individuals. Its function remains unclear, but as with other pseudogenes, PTMAP12 may potentially regulate gene expression or participate in oncogenic biology in cancer cells[1][3][4][5].
