Prothymosin alpha pseudogene 4 (PTMAP4) is a processed, non-coding pseudogene belonging to the human prothymosin alpha gene family[1][2][4]. Pseudogenes like PTMAP4 share sequence similarity with the functional prothymosin alpha gene (PTMA), but do not encode active proteins: they lack regulatory elements or carry sequence changes that prevent proper expression[2]. Most studies (and genomic databases such as HGNC and Ensembl) identify PTMAP4 on human chromosome 12 and confirm it is not transcriptionally active in human tissues[1][2][4]. There is one functional prothymosin alpha gene in humans—PTMA—whose protein product is involved in cell proliferation, apoptosis, and immune responses[5][6]. PTMAP4, however, does not contribute directly to these functions, and there is no current evidence that it has a biological or disease-related role[2][3][4].
