Proto-oncogene c-Fos messenger RNA (c-Fos mRNA)

Target
c-Fos mRNA
Molecular classification
Messenger RNA, Immediate early gene transcript
01

Overview

c-Fos mRNA is the transcript of the FOS proto-oncogene, which encodes the c-Fos protein, a critical component of the AP-1 transcription factor complex. As an immediate early gene (IEG), its mRNA is rapidly and transiently induced in response to a wide array of extracellular stimuli, including growth factors, cytokines, and neurotransmitters (2.2.2, 2.3.3). In the central nervous system, the induction of c-Fos mRNA serves as a hallmark of neuronal activation and is essential for processes such as synaptic plasticity and memory consolidation (2.3.5, 3.3.5). Pathologically, elevated levels of c-Fos mRNA are associated with oncogenic transformation and the progression of various cancers, as well as neurological conditions like epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease (2.3.1, 2.4.1). Therapeutic interventions targeting c-Fos mRNA, such as antisense oligonucleotides and siRNA, aim to downregulate its expression to mitigate pathological cell growth or aberrant neuronal activity (2.4.1, 3.2.1).
