Target intelligence / Profile preview
Proto-oncogene protein Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2) is a key regulator of apoptosis, the programmed cell death process. It is the founding member of the Bcl-2 family of proteins, which includes both anti-apoptotic and pro-apoptotic members that collectively control mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis. Bcl-2 promotes cell survival by preventing activation of pro-apoptotic proteins and inhibiting caspase activation. Overexpression or dysregulation is associated with various cancers, making it a significant target for cancer therapy development.
Blocks cytochrome c release; inhibits caspases; forms heterodimers with pro-apoptotic proteins.
