Proto-oncogene protein c-mer (MERTK) is a receptor tyrosine kinase belonging to the TAM family. It plays a crucial role in cell survival, migration, differentiation, and the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. MERTK is implicated in various cancers, where it contributes to angiogenesis, tumor cell migration and invasion, and enhanced cell survival signaling. Mutations in the MERTK gene are also linked to retinitis pigmentosa. As such, MERTK represents a promising therapeutic target, particularly in oncology drug development and cancer immunotherapy.
