Target intelligence / Profile preview

Proto-oncogene protein c-myc (MYC)

Target
MYC
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, bHLH-LZ family
01

Overview

MYC is a master regulator of cell growth, proliferation, metabolism, differentiation, apoptosis, and stem cell self-renewal. It is an intrinsically disordered nuclear protein that functions as a transcription factor, primarily through heterodimerization with MAX and binding to E-box DNA sequences. MYC is implicated in the majority of human tumors due to its central role in driving uncontrolled proliferation.

02

Mechanism of action

MYC overexpression or dysregulation leads to neoplastic transformation. Inhibition of MYC function is a therapeutic goal, but challenging.

Safety considerations

MYC is a challenging therapeutic target due to its intrinsically disordered nature and lack of classical ligand-binding pockets suitable for small molecule inhibition.Inhibition of MYC may have pleiotropic effects due to its broad role in cell regulation, potentially leading to toxicity.
