Overview

Protocadherin beta-5 (PCDHB5) is a neural cadherin-like cell adhesion protein belonging to the protocadherin beta gene cluster on chromosome 5. It is part of the cadherin superfamily and distinguished by encoding six extracellular cadherin domains and a cytoplasmic tail that diverges from other cadherin types. These proteins are thought to mediate homophilic, calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion, primarily in the nervous system, and are likely important for the establishment and function of specific neuronal circuits. While the specific functional and mechanistic details for protocadherin beta-5 remain incompletely understood, gene expression studies implicate its upregulation in aggressive forms of retinoblastoma, suggesting a possible role as a cancer biomarker. To date, PCDHB5 is not a known or established therapeutic target, and there are no drugs reported to interact directly with it.
