Target intelligence / Profile preview
The mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) is the electrical potential difference across the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is a key component of the proton motive force generated by the electron transport chain during oxidative phosphorylation, and it plays a central role in ATP synthesis, ion transport, and overall mitochondrial function. Stable levels of ΔΨm are crucial for normal cell functioning; transient changes can occur with physiological activity but prolonged disturbances may lead to cell dysfunction or death. Loss or sustained depolarization of ΔΨm can trigger mitophagy and is associated with various pathologies.
