The protoporphyrin IX biosynthesis pathway comprises a series of conserved enzymes that orchestrate the production of protoporphyrin IX from simpler precursors such as glycine and succinyl-CoA. This tetrapyrrole intermediate is the branching point for the synthesis of heme in animals and chlorophyll in plants, with iron or magnesium inserted by chelatases in the final steps.
