Overview

Key enzymes like protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase and ferrochelatase catalyze the conversion of protoporphyrinogen IX to protoporphyrin IX and then to heme, respectively. Disruption in this pathway leads to metabolic diseases like porphyrias and is harnessed therapeutically in photodynamic therapies for cancer. In plants, enzymes from this pathway have additional regulatory functions, such as RNA editing in plastids.
