Protozoa in the Intestinal Lumen

Molecular classification
Eukaryotic Microorganism, Protozoa
01

Overview

Protozoa in the intestinal lumen are single-celled eukaryotic organisms residing within the cavity of the human gastrointestinal tract. They exist as either harmless commensals or pathogens causing various gastrointestinal illnesses. Pathogenic species such as Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia can lead to significant morbidity. Transmission occurs primarily through the fecal-oral route, and diagnosis involves microscopic examination of stool samples.

Mechanism of action

Metronidazole and Tinidazole: Disrupt protozoal DNA and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis; Nitazoxanide: Inhibits pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) enzyme pathway; Paromomycin: Inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 16S rRNA of the protozoal ribosome
