Overview

PRRT3 antisense RNA 1 (PRRT3-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene located on chromosome 15 that does not code for a protein but is implicated in the regulation of gene expression, especially in cancer contexts[1][5]. It is upregulated in various human cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and prostate cancer[2][3]. Functionally, PRRT3-AS1 acts as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), chiefly by sponging microRNA-507 (miR-507), thereby derepressing target genes such as HOXB5[2][3]. Its overexpression promotes malignant behaviors such as enhanced proliferation, migration, and invasion of cancer cells, whereas its depletion suppresses these phenotypes both in vitro and in vivo[2][3]. Due to these characteristics, PRRT3-AS1 is being investigated as a potential diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic target in cancers, but no direct interacting drugs or established safety concerns have been reported to date. The full spectrum of its molecular mechanisms is still under investigation[1][2][3].
