Unlike its functional counterparts in other mammals which encode a secreted protein (Wdnm1-like), the human gene does not produce a functional protein and is classified as a processed pseudogene. In other species (such as mouse), the Wdnm1-like protein is upregulated during adipogenesis and may modulate extracellular matrix remodeling via MMP-2 activation, suggesting roles in adipocyte and potentially immune differentiation. In humans, the transcript has been reported to participate in the regulation of dendritic cell differentiation through noncoding RNA mechanisms, possibly by interacting with STAT3, but these roles are not yet functionally characterized and no protein is produced from this locus[1][2].
