Pseudogene similar to part of fatty acyl-CoA reductase 2 (ENSG00000284619)

Target
ENSG00000284619
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Homologous to short chain dehydrogenase/reductase family (by ancestry)
01

Overview

This locus is a **pseudogene**, meaning it is a nonfunctional DNA sequence homologous to the parent gene **fatty acyl-CoA reductase 2** (FAR2). Pseudogenes are defined by high sequence homology to functional genes but are incapable of producing a functional protein product[1][3]. While FAR2 is a reductase enzyme involved in fatty acid metabolism and specialized lipid biosynthesis[2][6], this pseudogene does not retain protein-coding capacity and is not a therapeutic target nor implicated in disease biology[1][3]. Like many pseudogenes, it may sometimes be transcribed at low levels, but such transcripts typically have no functional significance in human biology[3][7]. Pseudogenes occasionally complicate experimental designs (e.g., PCR amplification bias) but are not drug targets nor established biomarkers.
