Overview

PSMD14 pseudogene 1 (PSMD14P1) is a pseudogene corresponding to the PSMD14 gene, which encodes a component of the 26S proteasome complex involved in ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. PSMD14P1 itself does not encode a functional protein and does not serve as a therapeutic or druggable target. A pseudogene for PSMD14 is annotated on the long arm of chromosome 2 and does not participate in proteasomal or cellular processes[1][5]. The functional, druggable target is the protein-coding gene PSMD14, also known as 26S proteasome non-ATPase regulatory subunit 14, Rpn11, POH1, or PAD1[3][7]. PSMD14 plays essential roles in protein degradation, oncogenesis, DNA damage response, and is actively being pursued as a therapeutic target in cancer and related diseases[1][4][6]. In contrast, PSMD14P1 refers to the pseudogene and should not be considered as an active molecular target for therapy or mechanistic studies. There is therefore something wrong with this target name if used in the context of functional targets: PSMD14P1 is a pseudogene, not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or druggable protein.
