It also modulates signaling pathways like EGF receptor, PI3K/Akt, and estrogen receptor signaling, influencing its potential use in treating skin diseases and cancer.

Mechanism of action

Psoralens bind to a ~22 kDa receptor in the cell membrane or cytoplasm. Upon UVA exposure, the psoralen-receptor complex is photoactivated, leading to photoalkylation of the receptor and downstream signaling changes that affect cell proliferation, differentiation, and melanogenesis. Can also modulate hormone receptor pathways (e.g. estrogen receptor) and P-glycoprotein.
