Psychrobacter is a genus of Gram-negative, psychrotrophic bacteria within the family Moraxellaceae that are characterized by their ability to thrive in cold environments such as polar regions and marine habitats (Bowman, J. P., 2006, The Genus Psychrobacter). While predominantly environmental, species like Psychrobacter immobilis and Psychrobacter phenylpyruvicus have been identified as rare, opportunistic human pathogens associated with clinical conditions such as bacteremia, endocarditis, and meningitis (Caspar, Y., et al., 2013, Journal of Clinical Microbiology; Gini, G. A., 1990, Journal of Clinical Microbiology). As a taxonomic genus, Psychrobacter is not a specific molecular target; instead, it represents a group of organisms that can be treated with antimicrobial agents (Deschaght, P., et al., 2010). Antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones, cephalosporins, and aminoglycosides are typically used to treat infections caused by these bacteria by targeting essential bacterial functions like DNA replication and protein synthesis (Lloyd-Puryear, M., et al., 1991; Werno, A. M., et al., 2002). Clinical identification often relies on advanced methods like MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry or 16S rRNA gene sequencing due to the difficulty of distinguishing them from other Moraxellaceae using conventional biochemical tests.
As Psychrobacter is a genus of bacteria and not a molecular target, it does not have a single mechanism of action. Drugs used against these organisms typically inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis (beta-lactams), protein synthesis (aminoglycosides), or DNA gyrase activity (fluoroquinolones).
