Overview

The pudendal nerve is a major somatic nerve of the sacral plexus, specifically originating from the S2, S3, and S4 nerve roots, and is responsible for providing sensory innervation to the perineum and external genitalia (StatPearls, 2023). It also provides motor control to the external anal and urethral sphincters, playing a critical role in continence (NIH, 2022). Peripheral sensory nerves, more broadly, are the conduits for transmitting environmental and internal stimuli, such as pain, temperature, and touch, from the body's periphery to the central nervous system (PubMed, 2021).
