Overview

Smooth muscle cells in the pulmonary vasculature, primarily located in the walls of pulmonary arteries and arterioles, regulate vessel diameter, pulmonary arterial pressure, and vascular resistance. They contract and relax to control blood flow, interacting closely with endothelial cells. In diseases like pulmonary hypertension, these cells can undergo phenotypic modulation, leading to excessive proliferation and vascular remodeling. They express markers such as α-smooth muscle actin and produce growth factors. Key signaling pathways include nitric oxide, endothelin-1, and Rho kinase. Human primary pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells are used in research to study vascular diseases and screen drugs.
