Overview

The pulmonary microcirculation is the network of small vessels, primarily arterioles and capillaries (diameter <100 µm), within the lungs that facilitate the exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between alveolar spaces and blood, as well as the movement of nutrients, hormones, and waste products. This system is characterized by its thin-walled capillaries, low vascular resistance, and dense anatomical arrangement that maximizes surface area for diffusion[3][7]. Pulmonary microvascular function is crucial for efficient gas exchange, regulation of lung fluid balance, immune response, and adaptation to changing hemodynamics.
