Overview

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) is a non-invasive physical therapy that utilizes low-frequency electromagnetic pulses to influence biological tissues and cellular behavior (PMID: 29774136). Although it is categorized as a therapeutic modality rather than a biological molecule or receptor, PEMF exerts its effects by interacting with specific molecular components, most notably voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCC) and adenosine receptors such as A2A and A3 (PMID: 32669043, PMID: 23675549). These interactions lead to the modulation of intracellular signaling pathways, including the regulation of nitric oxide production and the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-1β and TNF-α (PMID: 28414371). Clinically, PEMF is widely recognized for its role in promoting bone healing in non-union fractures and managing pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis (PMID: 19338240). It serves as a physical alternative or adjunct to pharmacological treatments, particularly in regenerative medicine and orthopedics.
