Purine metabolism enzymes are a group of proteins responsible for the synthesis, interconversion, salvage, and degradation of purine nucleotides—key building blocks for DNA, RNA, and cellular energy molecules such as ATP and GTP. These enzymes maintain the balance between purine nucleotide synthesis and breakdown to support cell growth, proliferation, signaling, and energy homeostasis. Dysfunction or genetic defects in these enzymes can cause disorders such as gout (excess uric acid), immunodeficiencies (e.g., ADA deficiency), Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (HPRT deficiency).
