Purine synthesis refers to the biochemical pathways by which purine nucleotides are produced in living organisms. Purines are essential nitrogenous bases found in DNA and RNA, most notably as adenine (A) and guanine (G). The process of purine synthesis is fundamental for cell growth, division, and metabolism. The two main pathways are the de novo pathway (synthesizing purines from simple molecules) and the salvage pathway (recycling free purines). Inhibition of this pathway is a therapeutic strategy in cancer, viral infections and immunosuppression.
