Purinergic P2 Receptor (P2 receptor)

Target
P2 receptor
Molecular classification
Receptor, G protein-coupled receptor, Ion channel
01

Overview

Purinergic P2 receptors are a family of cell surface receptors activated by extracellular nucleotides, primarily ATP. They are divided into two main subtypes: P2X receptors (ligand-gated ion channels) and P2Y receptors (G protein-coupled receptors). Expressed on various cell types, they regulate immune responses, neuronal signaling, vascular function, and mechanotransduction. Dysregulation is implicated in chronic inflammation, neurodegenerative disorders, and thrombosis, making them therapeutic targets.

Mechanism of action

Various, including receptor antagonism and ion channel blockade. Examples include clopidogrel inhibiting ADP-induced platelet aggregation via P2Y12 blockade, and specific inhibitors targeting neuroimmune functions mediated by ionotropic or metabotropic forms.
