The P2X purinoceptor 7 (P2X7 receptor) is a ligand-gated ion channel activated by high concentrations of extracellular ATP. It forms a homo- or hetero-trimeric channel and allows cation influx, leading to downstream signaling events such as NLRP3 inflammasome activation and IL-1β release. Dysregulation of P2X7 has been implicated in various diseases, including chronic inflammatory diseases, neuropathic pain, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer.
