Overview

The purinergic receptor P2X3 (P2RX3) is a ligand-gated ion channel activated by extracellular ATP. It is primarily expressed in sensory neurons and mediates fast synaptic transmission of pain signals. It is involved in pain responses, hyperalgesia, allodynia, urinary bladder reflexes, and auditory neuron maturation. Selective antagonism of this receptor has therapeutic potential for treating chronic pain conditions and disorders involving abnormal urine storage or cough reflexes.
