The P2Y₂ receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor activated by ATP and UTP. It is widely expressed and plays roles in adipogenesis, inflammation, cancer progression, and other diseases. It signals through Gαq and integrin-mediated pathways. Selective antagonists are under development as potential therapeutics.
Activation by ATP/UTP leads to Gαq-mediated activation of PLC, IP₃ production, and intracellular calcium release. Also activates small GTPases (Rho, Rac, Cdc42) via integrin interactions.
