The purinergic receptor P2Y₁ plays a central role in platelet activation/aggregation through its response to extracellular nucleotides like ADP, making it a significant target for antithrombotic therapies. Its broader physiological roles are still being elucidated but likely extend into vascular biology and possibly neurobiology due to widespread tissue distribution.
Agonist binding leads to activation of phospholipase C and mobilization of intracellular calcium, resulting in platelet shape change and aggregation. Antagonists block ADP binding and subsequent activation.
