Purinergic Receptors

Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor, Ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor
01

Overview

Purinergic receptors are a family of plasma membrane proteins that mediate the effects of extracellular purines such as adenosine and ATP. They are divided into three main categories: P1 receptors (adenosine receptors), P2X receptors (ATP-gated ion channels), and P2Y receptors (nucleotide-activated GPCRs). These receptors are widely distributed and involved in various physiological and pathological processes, including neurotransmission, immune responses, inflammation, and cancer. Dysregulation of purinergic signaling is implicated in numerous diseases, making these receptors potential therapeutic targets.
