Purinoceptors, also known as purinergic receptors, are a family of plasma membrane receptors found in nearly all mammalian tissues. They play key roles in purinergic signaling—a system where extracellular purines (such as ATP and adenosine) act as signaling molecules. These receptors are involved in diverse physiological processes including learning and memory, locomotor and feeding behavior, sleep regulation, neural stem cell proliferation/migration, vascular reactivity, apoptosis, cytokine secretion, and immune responses. Purinoceptors are divided into two main families: P1 (Adenosine receptors) and P2 (ATP/ADP receptors). P2 receptors are further subdivided into P2X (ligand-gated ion channels) and P2Y (G protein-coupled receptors). These receptors regulate numerous biological functions including vascular tone modulation, neurotransmission, immune cell activation/inflammation, and renal autoregulation. They have been implicated in diseases such as hypertension and may serve as therapeutic targets for cardiovascular disease management.
