Overview

Purkinje cell protein 4 (PCP4) is a small, brain-specific, calmodulin-binding protein that modulates calcium-binding by calmodulin and thereby regulates multiple calmodulin-dependent signaling pathways, notably in neurons. PCP4 facilitates neurite outgrowth, enhances neurotransmitter release, and is involved in neuronal differentiation and cell survival; decreased PCP4 expression is observed in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's disease[1][2][5][6]. PCP4 is localized predominantly in the cytosol and nucleus of neurons and acts as a calmodulin regulator, but is not itself an enzyme, receptor, transporter, or transcription factor[2][6].
