Putative histone H1.9 pseudogene (H1-9P) is a human genomic locus classified as a pseudogene and orthologous to a mouse protein-coding gene (HILS1) that produces a testis-specific linker histone protein involved in chromatin remodeling during spermiogenesis. In humans, the locus is expressed but produces a disrupted, non-functional open reading frame, so it is unlikely to encode a functional protein or play an active role as a structural chromatin protein. There is no evidence for its involvement in disease or as a therapeutic target.
