Overview

Putative keratin-associated protein 20-4 (KRTAP20-4) belongs to the high glycine-tyrosine (HGT) keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, which forms part of the matrix that embeds hair keratin intermediate filaments within the hair cortex[3][2]. KRTAP20 subfamily proteins are characterized by a high content of glycine and tyrosine residues, contributing to their structural role in hair fiber morphology[2]. The primary function of these proteins is to help build the rigid yet flexible structure of the hair by supporting and crosslinking keratin intermediate filaments[3][2]. This gene is mostly studied for its influence on traits of animal fibers, such as wool diameter and yield in livestock. There is currently no evidence to support KRTAP20-4 as a therapeutic target, nor is it implicated in specific diseases or associated with any drugs[3][2][1].
