Overview

The Puumala virus envelope glycoprotein GnGc refers to the complex of two membrane glycoproteins, Gn and Gc, encoded by the medium (M) segment of the Puumala virus genome (a Hantavirus genus member in the Bunyavirales order). Together, these glycoproteins form spike complexes on the virion surface, which mediate early steps of viral infection, including attachment to host cell surfaces and pH-dependent fusion of the viral and endosomal membranes, allowing delivery of the viral genome into host cytoplasm. The Gc protein serves as the membrane fusion effector and is classed as a class II membrane fusion protein based on its structure. These proteins are also the primary target of neutralizing antibodies and play essential roles in hantavirus virulence and pathogenesis.
