Overview

PYCR1 antisense RNA 1 (PYCR1-AS1), also known as RP11-498C9.13, is a long non-coding RNA that functions as an antisense regulator of the PYCR1 gene. It binds to and stabilizes PYCR1 mRNA, preventing its degradation and increasing PYCR1 protein expression. PYCR1-AS1 has been shown to promote tumorigenesis in bladder cancer by enhancing cell proliferation, invasiveness, reactive oxygen species generation, and mitophagy. Downregulation of PYCR1-AS1 inhibits these processes, pointing to its potential as a therapeutic target in oncology. Expression levels of PYCR1-AS1 may have biomarker utility in assessing bladder cancer prognosis. There is evidence that PYCR1-AS1 and related lncRNAs interact with multiple regulatory nodes, though no approved drugs currently target this lncRNA directly.

Mechanism of action

No approved drugs target this RNA; mechanism if targeted would likely involve interference with its RNA-protein or RNA-RNA interactions, or modulating its expression to suppress its function in cancer.

03

Biological functions

Safety considerations

No direct therapeutic safety concerns are documented, but theoretical concerns would relate to unintended interference with normal gene regulation if targeted.
