Overview

Pyrimidine bases are a class of nitrogenous bases essential for encoding genetic information within DNA and RNA. The primary pyrimidines include Cytosine (C), Thymine (T), and Uracil (U). Cytosine is present in both DNA and RNA, Thymine is exclusive to DNA, and Uracil is exclusive to RNA. They pair with purines via hydrogen bonds to form the double helix structure of nucleic acids. Modified pyrimidines can also play roles in gene regulation.
