Overview
The pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC) is a large, multi-enzyme complex that catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate to acetyl-CoA, CO₂, and NADH. This reaction is a critical metabolic link between glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, enabling cells to convert glucose-derived pyruvate into acetyl-CoA for further energy production through aerobic respiration. Flux through PDC is tightly regulated by reversible phosphorylation, making it a therapeutic target in diseases like diabetes and cancer.
