Target intelligence / Profile preview
Qi invigoration is a fundamental therapeutic principle in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) aimed at restoring and enhancing 'Qi,' the vital energy believed to circulate through the body's meridians and sustain physiological functions (NIH NCCIH, 2023). It is not a specific molecular target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter; rather, it describes a clinical outcome achieved by various herbal formulations (Li et al., 2018, Frontiers in Pharmacology). In modern pharmacological research, Qi-invigorating agents, such as Panax ginseng and Astragalus membranaceus, are often characterized as adaptogens that improve mitochondrial energy metabolism and strengthen the immune response (Ko et al., 2006, Journal of Ethnopharmacology). Clinical symptoms of Qi deficiency include chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, and poor appetite, which these treatments aim to alleviate by modulating systemic homeostasis rather than a single pathway (PubMed, PMID: 29018440). Because 'Qi' is a holistic concept rather than a discrete biological molecule, it does not fit the standard definition of a therapeutic drug target in Western molecular biology.
Qi invigoration is not a single molecular mechanism but a systemic effect achieved through the modulation of mitochondrial ATP production, regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and enhancement of the immune system's cytokine profile (e.g., IL-2, IFN-gamma).
