Overview

The quadriceps femoris muscle is a large four-headed skeletal muscle group in the anterior thigh, consisting of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and vastus intermedius, which collectively form the most powerful extensor of the knee joint. It originates from various sites on the pelvis and femur, converging into a common quadriceps tendon that inserts via the patella and patellar ligament onto the tibial tuberosity, enabling leg extension crucial for walking, running, jumping, and squatting. The rectus femoris uniquely crosses both hip and knee joints, contributing to thigh flexion, while the vasti muscles primarily stabilize the patella and knee during movement. Innervated by the femoral nerve (L2-L4) and supplied by branches of the femoral artery, it plays key roles in proprioception, postural balance, and gait cycle coordination. Although essential for lower limb function, it is not a molecular therapeutic target like receptors or enzymes; instead, it is relevant in musculoskeletal conditions such as strains, tears, or atrophy, managed through physical therapy rather than pharmacology.
