Quinone oxidoreductase-like protein 1 (CRYZL1) is an enzyme encoded by the CRYZL1 gene, sharing significant sequence and structural homology with zeta-crystallin/quinone oxidoreductase proteins. It contains an NAD(P)H binding domain and has oxidoreductase activity, specifically as an NADPH-dependent quinone reductase distinct from other known quinone reductases. CRYZL1 is expressed in multiple tissues, including heart, brain, skeletal muscle, kidney, pancreas, liver, and lung, and may contribute to cellular metabolic processes and the regulation of oxidative stress. It is a component of the FERRY endosomal RAB5 effector complex, which recruits mRNAs and ribosomes to early endosomes, suggesting a role in mRNA localization/transport. Disease associations are limited but include Nephronophthisis 13 and Bardet-Biedl Syndrome 3. There is currently no published evidence identifying CRYZL1 as a drug target or biomarker, and no associated therapeutic safety concerns have been reported.
