Overview

A quorum sensing receptor is a bacterial protein that binds specific signaling molecules called autoinducers, permitting detection of population density and coordination of gene expression for collective behaviors, including virulence, biofilm formation, and bioluminescence. In Gram-negative bacteria, cytoplasmic receptors (e.g., LuxR, LasR) function primarily as transcription factors activating gene expression upon autoinducer (e.g., acyl-homoserine lactone) binding. In Gram-positive bacteria, membrane-bound histidine kinase receptors (e.g., AgrC) recognize autoinducing peptides, leading to phosphorylation cascades and gene regulation via two-component signal transduction systems. These receptors are central to numerous pathogenic and environmental processes and represent important targets for novel antimicrobial therapies designed to disrupt bacterial communication rather than growth, thus limiting the development of resistance.
