Overview

Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell-to-cell communication mechanism used primarily by bacteria to detect and respond to changes in population density through the regulation of gene expression. This system enables bacteria to coordinate collective behaviors that are most effective when performed by groups, such as virulence, biofilm formation, bioluminescence, sporulation, competence, conjugation, and antibiotic production. Targeting QS is a promising antimicrobial strategy.
